Best Soap for Sensitive Skin: What to Look For (and What to Avoid)
Sensitive skin doesn't have one single cause, which is why there's no single "best" soap that works for everyone. But there are ingredients and formulation choices that make a bar more or less likely to cause irritation — and knowing what they are makes shopping a lot easier.
What to Avoid
Sulphates. Sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS) and sodium laureth sulphate (SLES) are foaming agents used in a huge number of mass-produced soaps and washes. They create a rich lather, but they can also strip natural oils from the skin, which is a common trigger for dryness and irritation.
Parabens. Used as preservatives in a lot of personal care products, parabens are increasingly avoided by people with sensitive or reactive skin.
PFAS and triclosan. Less commonly listed but worth checking for — both are synthetic chemicals some people prefer to avoid entirely, sensitive skin or not.
Long ingredients lists. This one's a rule of thumb rather than a hard rule, but the more ingredients on a label, the more chances there are for one of them to be your particular trigger.
What to Look For
Cold-processed, naturally derived soap. Cold process soap retains its natural glycerin, which helps draw moisture to the skin rather than stripping it away — the opposite effect to a sulphate-heavy detergent bar.
Essential oil soap over synthetic fragrance. Synthetic fragrance is one of the most common irritants in personal care products. Soap scented with essential oils — like pine needle, sandalwood, lavender or sweet orange — uses naturally derived aromatic compounds instead, though it's worth noting that essential oils can themselves be an irritant for some people, so if you have a known sensitivity, always check the specific oil.
A short, legible ingredients list. If you can't recognise most of the words on the label, that's usually a sign it isn't the simplest option available.
Where Our Soap Fits In
Our bars are cold-processed, naturally derived, and free from SLS, SLES, parabens, PFAS and triclosan. Every scent is built from essential oils rather than synthetic fragrance — from the mellow Sandalwood & Pine Needle to the brighter Lemongrass & Sweet Orange. That said, everyone's skin is different: if you have specific sensitivities or diagnosed allergies, we'd always recommend checking the full ingredients list on the product page, or speaking to a dermatologist or pharmacist before switching soaps, rather than relying on marketing claims (including ours).
If gentle exfoliation is what you're after rather than avoiding irritation, our Peppermint, Seaweed & Kelp bar is the one customers ask for most — though if a minty tingle isn't your thing, any of our charcoal-based bars will do the same job more gently.
You can see full ingredients for every scent on our product pages, or browse the whole range in our shop.
