Homelessness and addiction continue to devastate lives across Leeds.

Chris Sylvester is a recovering addict who knows first-hand what it means to be trapped in cycles of self-destruction... and what it takes to break free.

That's why he's getting in a bath in Leeds City Square. To help others get clean!

The event aims to raise £50,000 to support people in recovery through Getting Clean CIC, a Leeds-based social enterprise. Hit the target, and £20,000 goes directly to a lived experience support project led by Forward Leeds - recovery support designed by people who've been there.

A First Day Pack gives someone the essentials to start again during their most vulnerable moments of leaving prison or entering treatment. The packs include things like soap, a toothbrush, peer-support resources, vouchers for haircut/wellbeing services, bus pass and other necessities. The packs are designed for corporate organisations looking to demonstrate CSR and Social Value, or philanthropic individuals/organisations looking to support people in need. We will share a detailed impact report with both qualitative and quantitative data to demonstrate how the First Day Packs have helped the target beneficiaries. The report will be designed to allow supporting organisations to measure their individual impact, and will detail final contents of the packs along with the prisons and rehabilitation centre to which they are donated. We plan to publish the report in Q4 2026.

How you can support

Recovery is possible! But it takes a village. 

If we’re going to make a difference in Leeds, we need employers and businesses to get behind us. This will help to make Leeds an 'Inclusive Recovery City', bringing businesses, services and people together to tackle the interconnected issues of unemployment, homelessness, drug addiction.

There are several ways to be involved in TUBtrap, from a single order to a headline partnership:

  • Employee & client gifting — pre-order Getting Clean soap as gifts for your staff, clients or partners. Rates available upon request. 
  • Pay it forward — buy First Day Packs for people leaving prison or entering treatment.
  • Bulk order or stock it — order at volume, or sell Getting Clean products through your own channels. Wholesale rates available upon request.

Impact Metrics

* These figures are based on the assumption that the £50k target is reached. Calculations of impact metrics and costs are indicative based on Getting Clean’s previous experience of delivering lived experience programmes and community development projects in Leeds. The expenditure of the donations will be detailed in our subsequent Impact Report. In the case that we do not achieve the £50k target, we would give donors the option to request their donation back. Assuming that no refunds are requested, we would use the donations to fund the elements of our project that would have the optimum impact and detail this in our Impact Report.

Why it Matters

Around 300,000 people access addiction services in the UK every year [1]. Two out of three employers say they wouldn't hire a former crack or heroin addict [1] - so people who do get clean often can't get work, and without a system of responsibility to fall into, relapse is more likely. Addiction touches families, communities, the NHS, the criminal justice system. We're trying to break that cycle by putting people in recovery into real jobs with responsibility.

300,000 crack/heroin addicts is 300,000 families in turmoil because one family member is struggling with trauma and self-acceptance. If we look at all 300,000 people as stats or as any less of a human being than you or I, we will never bring positive change and the number of addicts will continue to rise. These statistics don't include the huge number of people suffering in silence from other forms of addiction - closet alcoholism, gambling, social media, work, food, and more. Only by speaking openly about these issues can we support each other through them.

  • No. People keep asking this question. As much as Chris is up for a test of endurance, it would not be safe to be submerged in water for that amount of time.

  • Yes. Chris will sleep in the bath over the weekend until we reach our target of £50k or until midnight on the Sunday, whichever comes first.

  • The rule is that Chris stays in the bath. There will strictly be only one exception to this rule… toilet breaks.

  • Chris’s wellbeing will be monitored. There will be security guards and a first-aider on site at all times. It’s an endurance element with a serious purpose, designed to be safe, supported and [somewhat] dignified.

  • The whole event is live-streamed on TikTok [@gettingcleansoap], so your team can tune in and buy from anywhere. You can also visit in person on the Square, or order any time at gettingclean.co.uk.
